La verità qualche volta ha un effetto su pochi uomini anche all’interno di una intera nazione e nell’arco di un secolo, mentre il “mistero” che avvolge nell’oscurità più cupa alcune vicende, è destinato a menar per il naso milioni di persone all’infinito. Il senso è più o meno questo, non ricordo però a chi attribuire questa massima. Non esiste storia uguale all’altra, nessuna può essere sovrapponibile, ci possono essere similitudini anche inquietanti, ma mai due storie possono combaciare perfettamente, ed è anche questa la ragione del mistero. Esistono protocolli di indagine, e a volte gli indizi messi in fila danno un senso macabro alle vicende, ma anche chiarificatore nei margini del possibile. Oggi voglio raccontarvi lo strano ed inquietante caso della famiglia Sodder. E’ la vigilia di Natale del 1945 e a Fayetteville, una cittadina sui monti Appalachi, in Virginia, una famiglia di italo-americani si sta accingendo a ritirarsi per la notte. È una famiglia numerosissima, i coniugi George e Jennie hanno dieci figli,di cui il maggiore ha ventitré anni, la più piccola appena tre.
Presenti in casa ce ne sono nove perchè il piu’ adulto è partito per il servizio militare. I Sodder quindi si apprestano a festeggiare il Natale con quelli che, tra giovani ragazzini e bimbi sono a casa. Fayetteville è una città in cui si lavora in miniera, il carbone abbonda,i n paese sono tutti operai e le giornate sono lunghe e faticose. Del trasporto di carbone si occupa il signor Sodder, insieme ai due figli maggiori, la stanchezza ogni giorno taglia la schena, così mamma Jennie mette a dormire la piccola Sylvia di tre anni. La figlia Marian lavora come commessa e affonda la sua stanchezza sul divano, quel giorno è riuscita a rendere felici i fratelli più piccoli regalando loro dei giocattoli. Sono talmente eccitati che non intendono salire al piano superiore per dormire. La mamma lascia Maurice (14 anni), Martha (12 anni), Louis (9 anni), Betty (5 anni) e Jennie (8 anni) permettendo loro di rimanere alzati per continuare a giocare, con l’impegno però, di rimettere tutto in ordine prima di andare a dormire. Sarà l’ultimo residuo di normalità, di una sera come tante, perché da quel momento in poi, tutto non sarà mai più come prima.
A mezzanotte precisa come in tutte le storie macabre, avviene qualcosa,è il momento in cui l’imprevisto, l’imponderabile, l’ignoto entra con prepotenza nella vita dei Sodder. Jennie si è addormentata da poco, quando qualcosa la scuote dal torpore del sonno, il telefono squilla tante volte con insistenza. La donna raggiunge la cornetta, fatica a capire cosa viene detto all’altro capo del filo, una voce, le sta chiedendo (probabilmente appartenente ad una donna), se in quella casa abiti una persona di cui la signore Sodder non ha mai nemmeno sentito parlare .Sembra un’ ubriaca, continua a blaterare con frasi sconnesse. improvvisamente la voce si trasforma in un’ agghiacciante risata.
E’ tutto cosi’ strano, all’interno della casa le imposte delle finestre sono aperte, come anche la porta di casa sembra sia stata semplicemente appoggiata e non chiusa a chiave come al solito, e persino la luce all’ingresso è stata dimenticata accesa. Questi bambini! pensa lei ,sistema tutto e torna a letto. Sembra una notte di cui si deve privare del sonno, c’è inquietudine in lei, ansia inconsapevole, si riaddormenta, ma arriva alle sue orecchie un rumore, secco compatto, come di travi spezzate violentemente al piano di sopra. Percepisce nell’abitazione odore di fumo, anzi è fuoco!! Seguono attimi di panico, riesce a svegliare suo marito George, e lui fa lo stesso con i suoi figli maggiori John e George jr, nel frattempo Marian trascina fuori la piccola Sylvia dalla sua cameretta. Nessuno riesce a pensare, si deve solo agire e in fretta, ma cosa sta accadendo,nessuno lo capisce…perchè? All’una e trenta del giorno di Natale, la casa sta andando a fuoco e dei 5 bambini intrappolati dalle fiamme da quel momento in poi non si saprà più nulla. George tenta di rientrare in casa, ma tutto arde, rompe un vetro, si ferisce, ricorda di avere una scala, potrebbe arrampicarsi fin lassù, e raggiungere i figli, ma è una disdetta, la scala non si trova più’ nel posto dov’era sempre stata. Arrivano i vigili del fuoco, ma non c’è piu’ nulla da fare. La polizia stabilisce che si è trattato di un corto circuito, ma come è possibile? L’impianto era stato rimesso a nuovo di recente. Il filo elettrico risulta reciso, come potevano divampare le fiamme con le luci accese? E la signora aveva risposto al telefono poco prima, e tutto funzionava. Non resta che cercare i corpi dei piccoli per dar loro sepoltura, ma qualcosa continua a non tornare, dei bambini non si trova la minima traccia, neppure un ossicino.
I bambini vengono dichiarati dalla polizia ufficialmente morti. Si avviano le indagini, arrivano molte persone a testimoniare, c’è un autista che sostiene di aver visto delle persone aggirarsi la notte dell’incendio nelle vicinanze di casa Sodder, lo stesso autista in seguito dichiarerà di aver notato anche delle persone lanciare delle bombe incendiarie contro la casa. Una donna è pronta a testimoniare di aver visto una macchina con dei bambini a bordo, che si allontanava a forte velocità dal luogo dell’incendio. E un’albergatrice, dichiara di aver parlato con delle persone riuscendo ad identificare la lingua di alcuni sconosciuti, incontrati in compagnia dei bambini,era certamente italiano.Questo da vita ad un’altra ipotesi delle peggiori, si chiama: MAFIA. Nel 1949 George setacciò il terreno della sua proprietà, rinvennero ossa umane e organi che analizzati in laboratorio risultarono appartenere a bovini. Questa vicenda si sviluppò per anni, con molti colpi di scena e arresti.
Un giorno nella casa ricostruita arrivò tramite posta una foto, ritraeva un ragazzo tanto simile ad uno dei figli Sodder. La famiglia assunse un investigatore privato, ma di lui si persero le tracce, in brevissimo tempo non fu mai più ritrovato.Tornò allora l’ipotesi più viva che mai della mafia che operava anche, in quel tratto di Virginia del sud. La storia proseguì per anni, il Signor Sodder era attivo per il trasporto del carbone, ma forse non era quella l’unica attività, come si sa, tutto in America fa businnes, i soldi fanno gola a molti, soprattutto alle famiglie mafiose, che hanno tentacoli ovunque. Alcuni pensano che i bambini siano stati rapiti e portati in Italia. Il cognome originale dei Sodder deriva in realtà dall’italiano Soddu, molto presente in Sardegna, ma qualcuno, con quel cognome abita certamente a Cinisi, in provincia di Palermo. La foto giunta per posta alla famiglia, arrivò con un codice postale Siciliano A90135 e, si sa per certo, che alcuni Soddu sapevano anche allora, che cos’è una lupara, una vendetta,o un delitto “d’onore”.
