Artista poliedrico e personale, dotato oltre che di grande capacità interpretativa anche di talento compositivo non comune, Prince era stato senza dubbio una delle riconosciute icone degli anni 80 con il suo funk elettrico incalzante e nervoso, iconoclasta e policromatico e per la compiutezza e la geniale fantasia con cui sapeva coniugarlo al gusto della soul ballad e all’estetica del pop deluxe. Era un artista puro, “nero” fino al midollo che mai accettò mediazioni con il mainstream più scontato e che anche quando raggiunse le vette della classifica con album come “1999”, “Purple rain” lo fece rispettando il suo modo di essere e il suo stile che ben presto divenne un vero marchio di fabbrica. Dotato di vocalità duttili e magnetiche e di un falsetto riconoscibile e potente, Prince ebbe molte esperienze anche come produttore e scopritore di talenti (vedi la poderosa Sheila E) ed assunse varie identità perchè la creatività dirompente gli imponeva di percorrere molte strade, anche contemporaneamente, e diverse tra loro. Da anni il suo funk era diventato più elettronico e i suoi lavori più sperimentali che di grosso impatto.
